This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The project was executed with the goal to foster the use of electric vehicles within the Medieval city of Rhodes. The golf-type electric cars follow 5 predetermined routes within the city, where no other means of transport can perform, from 9 in the morning until midnight. The transport service is free of charge.
The objectives of this project were: 1) protecting the Monument from the movement of all types of vehicles; 2) serving residents, activists, visitors, people with disabilities and vulnerable groups following the universal ban on vehicles entering the Medieval city, except for these permanent residents; 3) the most complete promotion internationally and worldwide of Rhodes, through the execution of a transport project with electric vehicles.

Resources needed
The cost of the measure was 195,000 € plus taxes and it was covered by own resources of the Municipality of Rhodes.
Evidence of success
This newly applied measure in the Historical city of Rhodes was so well-welcomed that the Municipality of Rhodes is now planning the extension of the measure (supply of electric vehicles / develop free public transport) for everyone within the walls of the old city.
Potential for learning or transfer
Islands that wish to be transformed into smart islands, as Rhodes does, should consider the transformation of their urban transport modes, at least within the historical centres. Small public electric vehicles can provide a good solution, as they efficiently transport locals and tourists with zero emissions and zero noise while comfortably enjoying the scenery of the historical city centre.
