With EMAS fewer emissions through less air travel during and after covid
About this good practice
EMAS has been directly affected by the Covid crisis and has had to adapt itself to deal with the consequences. Of all the activities for most of the companies, business flights are among the largest contributors to greenhouse gases. It is important to implement a guidance document concerning business travels. To get all information it is necessary to organize internal workshops to get recommendations of all parties to be able to take actions. Good quality of flight details are important to set goals within a company. A stricter approval processes for air travels and implantation of a monthly controlling system of flight datas is needed. In order to create an even greater degree of awareness on the part of employees the details of the flights must be known and should be available on the corporate intranet. Talking to the funding pools to allow more hybrid/remote meetings during the project is another goal. A detailed catalog of measures will be created and introduction of carbon offsetting for business travel.
Resources needed
How many people are needed in a company for implementation depends on the maturity of the data on air travel and EMAS.
Evidence of success
Implementation and promotion of EMAS in public administrations, to create more awareness about the effects of indirect aspects of business travels and the associated emissions. We need to create a new way of thinking, working together online must be accepted by more clients. There is a need for awareness building within the different funding pools. In the future, the number of flights must no longer reach the pre-Covid numbers.
Potential for learning or transfer
Business trips by plan is an issue for many companies, especially in the service sector and public administration. The GP has the potential to be transferred to the public administration and all EMAS companies. A detailed catalogue of suggestions and alternatives on how to avoid air travel in the future should be shared with all EMAS and future EMAS organisations.
