Wood vinegar as a natural bio-herbicide

About this good practice
Therefore, some countries have forbidden the sale of these herbicides and some municipalities have limited its use in public parks.
Demonstration works to verify the technical, economic and environmental viability of the application of natural bio-herbicides have been developed in Castilla-La Mancha. Wood vinegar is obtained by condensation of gases produced in the thermal treatment of lignocellulosic wastes and consists mainly of water (80-90%) and more than 200 organic compounds (10-20%), being acetic acid the major component. This product is innovative because of the environmental improvements, and its safety for human health.
Administrations, forest companies and agents related to the agricultural sector are beneficiaries of this GP.
Expert opinion
This is an excellent example of substitution of a harmful product with a less harmful one using the by-products from another industry - lignocellulosic waste. Wood vinegar shows promise as a natural bio-herbicide due to its effectiveness against weeds and its environmentally friendly properties. It can be used in organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices, offering an alternative to synthetic herbicides. This practice increases the circularity of the bio-based industry finding another application of a waste previously disposed of. It is in line with the EU efforts to further develop the bio-based economy including funding within Horizon Europe partnership for bio-based economy. Regions with excessive agricultural and forest wastes would especially benefit from this good practice.
