zero disposable plastic
About this good practice
The presence of single-use plastic on beaches is a global problem that must be solved locally. It is important that citizens understand that the problem exists and that it has serious impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems and coastal communities. This good practice is intended to reduce the impact of the event which, in addition to the environmental and sports component, has a night component (concerts with bars). To this end, the organization of the Ocean Spirit event had to define rules for the stakeholders (operators of the night bars) of the event, who could not promote disposable plastic products. This rule was released before operators applied to be at the event. The organization purchased reusable cups that were partly offered to bar operators. However, they had to find more reusable cups to meet the demand for their products/beverages. The other products were purchased by the bar operators, taking into account the type of product sold. For example, we had an operator who sold yogurt with granola and had to buy cardboard bowls. the costs resulting from the acquisition of plastic substitute materials were acquired by the operators (restaurant and bars). We do not record these costs because they are not part of Ocean Spirit's organization.
Resources needed
This good practice was not funded. The only cost for the event promoter was the purchase of the eco cup (€1031.53) and reusable bottles (bottles financed and delivered to the participants of the pedagogical tent - €367.23).
Evidence of success
3700kg undifferentiated waste; 93.75kg plastic waste; 343.75kg paper waste; 1539 reusable bottles delivered
Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice has not yet been promoted as a requirement in another event promoted by the promoting entity of the Ocean Spirit event. However, given the experience it is easily applicable to other events (whether in coastal areas or not). More and more event organizers feel the need/obligation of the event they organize to take into account the application of the best actions/measures/practices in favor of the preservation of human resources. We are promoting this measure (not out of obligation) at larger events such as Carnival.
