Recording: green policy challenges in maritime regions
On 5 October 2021, the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform and the Interact ‘Knowledge of the Seas Network’ co-hosted a joint event on green policy challenges in maritime regions.
To set the scene, Philipp Schwartz from Interact took the floor to illustrate the main green policy challenges currently faced within the Knowledge of the Seas Network. Emphasisng how interregional learning can be used to address these green policy challenges more efficiently, Thorsten Kohlisch provided a general overview of the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform and presented an outlook to the future funding opportunities of the Interreg Europe Programme whilst Astrid Severin introduced the services the Platform zooming in on the areas of environment, resource efficiency and low carbon economy.

Key Learnings
- Maritime regions face a number of green policy challenges ranging from blue energy and coastal tourism to marine litter and green port management
- Tangible solutions have been developed in various regions and cities and can be transferred through interregional learning and knowledge exchange
- Coastal cities and regions such as Greifswald (Germany), Burgas (Bulgaria), Marseille (France) and Thessaloniki (Greece) have successfully used the services of the Policy Learning Platform to address their green policy challenges
- Joining forces allowed Interact and Interreg Europe to reach out to complementary target groups and actors dealing with green and maritime challenges across Europe.
Specific, individual services such as Matchmaking sessions and Peer-reviews are readily available policy makers in maritime regions to discuss their green policy challenges with hand-picked peers.
