About this good practice
“1 village = 1MW” programme is an initiative of Bükk-MAK Leader Association. This programme is elaborated in the Bükk region, which is one of the most disadvantaged regions in Hungary with high rate of unemployment (over 15%), low share of GDP (cca 50% of the national average). The main characteristic feature of this region is the missing earlier industrial potential and scraping agriculture with bad conditions, predominant aged and uneducated people, missing service sector.
The first objective of the programme is to use rural renewable energy sources (RES) like agricultural waste (i.e. biomass gathered from forests, agricultural plantations chopped locally, kitchen waste, dung, streams), together with solar and wind energy as well as heat from old mines through heat pumps, to produce electrical and thermal energy. The second objective is to establish new workplaces to make structural transformation of energy production and utilization.
Although the “1 village = 1MW” programme is aimed to increase energy efficiency and environmental awareness, job creation and rural SMEs development is an important focus of this project. As a result of the development 15 new job was created in the project area. In this way the principle of locally employing local local labor could also be realized.
Although the programme ended in 2013, but the established network and the self-supplying energy system is still working, moreover part of the jobs still exist today also.

Evidence of success
The results are as follows: increase of using of renewable energies; cleansing clean technologies; achievement of a sustainable and green economic growth; improving quality of life; creation of working places for undereducated people (15 new job creation); community development;
Potential for learning or transfer
The main transferable issues are as follows: how to redefine the economic potential of a given territory; management opportunities of a rural area; potential of local community in rural development; potential of participative planning in rural development; potential of innovative elements (solar, wind, mine heat, hydrogen, village biogas plant with local delivery, and a smart control system) in rural development;
