Drastic on Plastic
About this good practice
These projects respond to the challenges of reducing plastics and waste produced by events and more particularly festivals. They are part of within the framework of the regional policy "zero plastic in the Mediterranean".
Adaptated from the British Drastic on Plastic charter to French festivals, signed by more than 100 French festivals, in order to encourage and support them to reduce their plastic waste.
Publication of a downloadable guide on the Drastic on Plastic website, organization of thematic webinars for signatories on alternatives to identified plastic products, creation of self-diagnosis and action plan tools.
In addition, and to provide more in-depth support for events, the
COFEES has set up zero waste workshops and a toolbox, winner of the AAP zero plastic in the Mediterranean:
- creation of a toolbox to reduce and better manage waste from events (detailed sheets of local and national actors proposing solutions to reduce or manage waste from events)
- organization of 6 departmental workshops between December 2020 and April 2021 bringing together event organizers, local authorities and associations to discuss issues/regulations, constraints and expectations
- organization in October 2021 of an event waste day in order to evaluate the workshops and to share solutions and experiments between events, local authorities and associations at the regional level, solutions and experiments.
Resources needed
National financing of the charter is by the Ministry of Culture, the CNM, the ADEME and the DRAC PACA. The Drastic on Plastic France project is managed and animated by the R2D2 network, which includes 8 support mechanisms for sustainable development events.
Evidence of success
There are currently 118 festivals involved in Drastic on Plastic throughout France, including 14 in the South Region. And 293 participants in the departmental workshops in the South Region.
In the process of analysis, the volume of plastic waste generated by the signatory festivals, the % of plastic they wish to reduce and ultimately the volume of plastic avoided between 2019 and 2023.
Potential for learning or transfer
The charter is based on a British charter that has been adapted and supplemented by a support system and tools.
The chart is supported in the regions by members of the R2D2 collective
(https://www.drastic-on-plastic.fr/le-collectif), and any new member of the collective will be responsible for its implementation in their own region.
Quebec wishes to adapt the charter and its tools, which are currently being studied by R2D2. This will probably require the agreement of the British as it was the case for the French project.
The Toolbox and the workshops can very well be duplicated in other regions, it requires collaboration with local authorities, the region and the associative actors on waste. COFEES can share its tools and methods.
