Som Gent de Profit
About this good practice
The Catalan Waste Agency has launched a large public communication campaign aimed at raising awareness among the population that waste of food we throw away the money that it has cost to produce, the natural resources invested and we disapprove of a very valuable resource.
In Catalonia, a study carried out by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, from which the guide "A more responsible consumption of food" has been presented, has set figures which sized waste around 260,000 tonnes per year. This amounts to 34.9 kg per inhabitant per year, 7% of solid food collection. Many of these foods are thrown into homes, shops and restaurants.
This campaign starts during the European Week of Waste Prevention (from November 22 to 30), coinciding with the celebration of the Food Waste Prevention Theme Day. In Catalonia, to give visibility to this topic, different types of activities are organized throughout the territory, such as utilization workshops, audits in schools, collection of edible surpluses for social entities, etc.
In 2014, the Waste Agency of Catalonia together with the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and Barcelona City Council launched the campaign SOM GENT DE PROFIT, to increase citizens’ knowledge of food waste and how to act to reduce it and prevent it. The campaign has been extended with different actions that are recurrent since they respond to the continuity of the actions that have been developed since November 2014 and throughout 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018
