About this good practice
WMG is an academic department of the University of Warwick and is the leading international role model for successful collaboration between academia and the public and private sectors, driving innovation in science, technology and engineering, to develop the brightest ideas and talent that will shape our future.
WMG is the answer to some of the main challenges in the transport sector like enhancing innovation capacity in transport SMEs, improve links to Universities and improve market access and productisation.
WMG has the expertise to evaluate ideas, the facilities to jointly develop new technologies to turn opportunities into commercial reality, and the resources to create education programmes that help employees remain at the forefront of knowledge. Companies including Jaguar land Rover, Network Rail, and Dyson have provided input into the design of programmes. WMG also works in collaboration with the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and has secured a further £100m funding for the next five years.
WMG helped to reinvigorate manufacturing industries in the region, brought in significant overseas investment and improved the competitiveness of hundreds of businesses. It won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2009.

WMG is part of Warwick University. It has an annual turnover of more than £510 million and 37% of its academics and 31% of its students are from overseas. 14,700 undergraduates, 8,900 postgraduates and 6,000 staff benefit from studying and working in an innovative, research-rich environment.

- 1980: WMG started working with the automotive sector
- 1997: Partnership starts with BAE Systems on the Procurement Developing You Programme (900 participants from more than 35 businesses)
- 2003: Started working with the Rail sector and launched the custom executive Stepping Stones programme
- 2007: Over 400 companies assisted; 183 new products or processes developed; over 4,000 jobs safeguarded and over 2,000 learning opportunities

Collaborations between Universities and the Private Sector, highlighted in examples like the WMG, are key to fast forwarding growth in the transport sector in order to maintain/develop an innovative hedge to its products/ services and developing advanced skills in its people.
WMG reached global companies, further afield than locally based ones. This underlines a need for Institutions like the WMG on an international level and the potential of the transferability of the same model in other countries.
