What are the benefits and challenges of interregional cooperation in research and innovation? How does this relate to the implementation of smart specialisation strategies? How to improve the capacity of regions lagging behind to engage in interregional cooperation activities and international R&I networks?

These were the questions discussed during a joint online workshop 'Smart specialisation specialisation in regions lagging behind: Interregional cooperation as a way to overcome challenges?' by Interreg Europe and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) on 13 October during the European Week of Regions and Cities.

If you missed the session or would like to re-watch it, a session recording is available as a video on demand.

During the session, speakers shared their experiences of the different cases of interregional cooperation and innovation policies based on research, projects and practical experience.

  • Elisa Gerussi (Joint Reserach Centre) outlined the work done by the JRC to analyse the benefits interregional cooperation can bring to S3 implementation.
  • Cornelia Muraru (National Institute of Research, Romania) talked about the work of Clusterix 2.0 project and RIS3 in Romania, focusing on clusters in particular.
  • Paulo Santos (Norte Regional Development and Coordination Commission, Portugal) shared the experience of cross-border smart specialisation strategy from the Euroregion of Galicia (Spain) and Norte (Portugal) building on joint innovation in areas of common interest.
  • Svilen Kunev (University Angel Kanchev of Ruse, Bulgaria) gave an example of cooperation in the research infrastructures from the university perspective.
