The European Commission gives recognition to outstanding innovation in energy efficiency and renewables in the EU Sustainable Energy Awards. The competition and the award ceremony are part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) that takes place 25-29 October 2021.

Call for nominations for the 2021 edition is open until 17 May (17:00 CEST).

You can apply with your own project or nominate another 'energy champion' that merits EU-wide recognition.

An expert, high-level jury selects the most successful and inspiring projects in two categories: Innovation and Engagement. The public gets to vote for their favourite initiative to receive a special Citizens' Award, as well as winners for Woman in Energy and Young Energy Trailblazer categories. All winners will be announced in October during the EU Sustainable Energy Week.

Who can apply?

You can apply with a project, action or activity related to energy efficiency and renewables.  It must be based or implemented in the European Union. It should not be a commercial product or an academic study without long-term, real-scale application.

The initiative can be ongoing or completed. Activities must be ongoing or concluded after 30 June 2020. Ideas or projects at the planning stage are not eligible. Previously shortlisted EUSEW Awards finalists are also excluded from the competition.

What are the categories?

There are four categories:

  • Engagement (inspiring activities with high social acceptance potential)
  • Innovation (outstanding and innovative EU-funded activities)
  • Women in Energy (activities led by women contributing to clean energy transition and European energy and climate targets)
  • Young Energy Trailblazer (activities by young people (below 35) that advance clean energy transition and inspire energy and climate action)

What is the selection criteria?

Initiatives will be judged based on three assessment criteria:

  • Concept (originality)
  • Implementation (clearly described and feasible actions)
  • Impact (measurable impact, positive contribution to the European energy and climate targets)

Deadline to apply

Apply online by 17 May 2021 (17:00 CEST).
