Optimising the Just Transition Fund and EU support for the Ústí Region

On 14 and 15 November 2023, the Policy Learning Platform is hosting a peer review together with the Ústí Region, Czech Republic.
The Ústí region is looking for ways to make successful use of the Just Transition Fund in combination with other European Union support mechanisms setting up a suitable mix of financial instruments that genuinely match the needs of regional enterprises.
The Ústí Region is going through an economic transformation linked to the decline of coal mining and the decarbonization of energy-intensive industry. The Just Transition Fund (JST) is one of the most relevant instruments to face the impacts of the transformation of the economy. The Fund makes it possible to activate not only grants but also other instruments of financial support for SMEs to enhance the diversification of the economy.
In the Czech Republic, there is still little experience with the use of financial instruments and in particular a combination of public and private funds. There are venture funds and programs of the National Development Bank co-financed by the EIB, but the country still has little experience with matching such instruments with the use of the ERDF and the Just Transition Funds at the regional level.
