Sustainable urban mobility
The interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform received a request for more information on sustainable urban mobility.
Our Thematic Expert for a Greener and better Connected Europe, Simon Hunkin, has compiled a list of useful resources. As it is a broad topic on which the Interreg Europe projects have done a lot of work, you can find an overview below, based on each sub-area.
Citizen engagement and participatory approaches
In the event follow-up articles below, you will find several good practices that focus on citizen engagement and behaviour change, such as approaches to participatory planning and co-creation.
- Webinar on behaviour change for sustainable mobility
- Workshop on fostering citizen-focused urban mobility
- Workshop on behaviour change and participatory processes
- Matchmaking on involving young people in mobility planning
The key project to explore here is e-smartec, which has a lot of excellent good practices on citizen engagement, but also some interesting reports which you will find in the library section.
Active transport
Diving into specific subsectors of sustainable urban mobility, we can explore active transport – getting more people to walk and cycle – which has also been a hot topic in recent years, with a lot of interest following the COVID-19 pandemic. Explore our policy briefs that focus on this area:
We have also organised a webinar series focused on cycling:
- Getting more people to cycle
- Infrastructure development for cycling
- Strategic planning for cycling
- Cargo bikes for the last mile
- Cost benefit analysis of bicycles vs. cars
Explore our closed projects on cycling including SchoolChance, EU CYCLE, CYCLEWALK, as well as active projects CYCLING WATERWAYS, CycleRight and STEP-UP.
Low-carbon public transport
In the area of public transport, many regions are looking to both decarbonise their fleets and also increase the use of public transport by making it more comfortable and convenient. With the aim of not only reducing carbon emissions but also reducing congestion, improving air quality, contributing to greater equality, improving road safety and returning public space to use by citizens.
The following resources explore these topics:
For suburban and peri-urban areas, have a look at:
- Policy brief on demand responsive transport
- Webinar on demand responsive transport
Explore our projects that tackled the issue directly, such as eBUSSED, OptiTrans, SMART-MR and PE4Trans. On the MaaS topic, explore the former project PriMaaS and the current project MaaSolutions.
E-mobility
E-mobility was a key feature of mobility projects under the last programme, with many projects, namely E-MOB, EMOBITICY, e-MOPOLI, EV Energy, eBussed and Prometeus. Working with these projects the Policy Learning Platform organised a series of e-mobility webinars, covering a variety of topics, and also produced a policy brief on regional approaches for supporting e-mobility.
