Pesa I pensa (Weight and Think)

About this good practice
- separate into four bins (trash bin, inedible organic waste, edible organic waste, water);
- weigh every day in a systematic and precise manner;
- record data by means of an app: meals served, waste generated etc;
- think: analyse data related to the generated waste;
- propose: set targets to be achieved with the children.
The Campos Estela has estimated that wastage could be reduced by 75 tonnes of food every day, given that this project could contribute to a 5% reduction of the total amount of food wasted in Catalonia.
Expert opinion
Globally, food waste alone generates about 8% – 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that Europe produces 58 million tonnes of food waste each year, equivalent to €132 billion. The reduction of food loss and waste is an important part of EU’s Green Deal and its Farm to Fork Strategy and Circular Economy Action Plan. Member States are required to take the necessary measures to reduce food waste by the end of 2030. This good practice is an inspiring example of an educational and awareness raising initiative encouraging school children to reduce food waste. The practice, tested in more than 30 schools, demonstrated positive results which led to food waste reduction in the region. It also gained international recognition. The practice can be interesting for other regions aiming to address food waste and raise awareness among schoolchildren.
