About this good practice
The Institute for Agri-food Technology and Infrastructure of Navarre (INTIA) provides advisory services to the agricultural sector. Its main goal is to improve the transfer of research and innovation results to farmers, to find solutions to farmers’ problems and needs and to improve farms’ profitability and sustainability. INTIA’s extensive network of 150 technicians distributed over 13 offices and experimentation network make sure this happens.
Resources needed
The key to success was and remains the combination of public and private funding. Specifically there are 3 lines of funding:
1.- Partners: 50% public and 50% private
2.- Projects: 65% public
3.- Contract for assistance: 100% private

Evidence of success
The Government of Navarre is a key stakeholder, as INTIA is an instrumental company of the Department of Rural Development, Environment and Local Administration of Navarra. INTIA has been designated as official advisory service by the Regional Government in the new Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020.
Potential for learning or transfer
This practice has a potential interest because it shows a way of using private (by partners) and public funding (for example through projects or rural development) for creating an advice and training service. This service is focused on production but could be implemented also in other parts of the chain processes like processing, marketing and commercialization. The interest relays on a strong feedback between the agricultural sector and technicians that allows a detection of problems or needs in advance but also a strong impartiality and reliability due to recommendations based on experimentation and demonstration trials. It could be used to foster regional development agencies to invest or create a line for financing the advice and training needed in the region in cooperation with fees paid by users.
