About this good practice
Landare is an organic consumers’ association, a cooperative supermarket of the metropolitan area of Pamplona. Its members joined to have access to ecological and healthy food at popular prices. They bet on products of proximity and a direct deal with producers, and this allows the establishment of fair and mutually beneficial exchange relations.
Landare is an association without a lucrative purpose. It now has 2.800 member families and offers more than 3.000 references in 2 stores. One of the aims of consumers is to get variety, quality and fair prices in the shopping basket. Fair trading relationships are promoted, buying directly from 122 producers and creating long-lasting relationships based on mutual trust. The sale prices are established so that the 80% goes to producers and 20% to management costs such as salaries, rentals…In this way, a lower price is obtained for consumers and a greater margin for producers, forging a win-win relationship. Everything that is produced in close proximity and produced in an ecological way is in Landare. In terms of distribution, 67% of what is purchased in Landare is purchased directly, a percentage that increases to 95% in dairy and cheese.
It is a participative organization, committed on values and benefits for the community: healthy food, agroecology and responsible consumption. It has 25 employees who work with division of responsibilities and horizontality, with participatory decision-making through assemblies and

Resources needed
Landare has not received neither public nor private funding. No loans of any kind are requested. The activity has gone ahead with the contributions of each partner (an annual fee) and with what is generated by its own activity.
Evidence of success
The success is due to the fact that it allows access to a wide variety of products at amore affordable price. The number of partners – consumers demonstrates the success of Landare. It has grown during last years, from 450 consumers in 2009 up to 3100 in 2018. This increase is also reflected in suppliers: In the year 2016 the number of farmers benefiting from the measure was 65, and the processors benefiting from the measure was 82. Currently the quantitys are 75 and 95 respectively.
Potential for learning or transfer
This practice is interesting to be transferred. It allows an access to ecological product that otherwise the consumer cannot have, solving problems of little supply and high price. At the same time it favors the local ecological producer sector, grouping a demand that otherwise producers and processors would not have access to. In fact, in several localities1), similar practices are being implemented (in a more or less advanced state of development) with the support and transference of Landare experience.
